The Biggest Wash Day Mistakes I See Behind My Stylist's Chair.

Everything you need to know about cleansing, conditioning, moisturizing, and maintaining healthy hair—regardless of hair type.

Wash Day is more than a routine—it’s the foundation of healthy hair.

Whether your hair is straight, wavy, curly, coily, natural, relaxed, color-treated, or somewhere in between, every healthy head of hair begins with proper cleansing, conditioning, and moisture balance.

Unfortunately, many people spend hundreds of dollars on products while overlooking the fundamentals that truly determine the health of their hair.

In this first installment of The Wash Day Series, we’re breaking down the essential principles that every hair type needs to thrive.

Step 1: Cleansing – Start with a Clean Foundation

Healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp.

Your scalp naturally produces oils, while products, sweat, dirt, and environmental pollutants build up over time. When this buildup isn’t properly removed, it can lead to dull hair, irritation, itching, flaking, and difficulty retaining moisture.

Do:

✔ Cleanse your scalp thoroughly. How do you actually know if you are doing that correctly!!?

✔ Focus shampoo on the scalp first, then allow the lather to cleanse the lengths of the hair.

✔ Use your fingertips—not your nails—to gently massage the scalp. But…but….but…if you can take it, and you do like a good scrub. Go for it, get in there, but don’t hurt yourself lol!

✔ Clarify periodically if you regularly use heavy products, oils, butters, gels, or dry shampoo. An Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) rinse would be a great way to do that, but we will get into that another time.

Don’t:

✘ Scratch your scalp with your fingernails.

✘ Pile hair on top of your head while shampooing, which can encourage tangling. Helllllp! Raise your hand if you are gulity of this!

✘ Assume more shampoo equals cleaner hair.

✘ Skip cleansing because you’re trying to “hold on to moisture.”

A dirty scalp cannot function optimally, regardless of hair texture.

Pro Tip:

Your shampoo should be chosen based on your scalp’s needs—not necessarily your hair type. Interesting right? I thought so, but it does have some value if there is a real scalp need that outweighs what your strands may need.

Step 2: Conditioning – The Most Underrated Step

Conditioner restores moisture, smooths the hair cuticle, improves elasticity, and reduces breakage.

Think of shampoo as opening the door and conditioner as helping close it.

Many people rush through this step, but proper conditioning can dramatically improve the appearance, softness, and manageability of your hair.

Do:

✔ Apply conditioner generously from mid-length to ends.

✔ Use a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush if appropriate for your hair type.

✔ Allow conditioner to remain on the hair for the recommended time.

✔ Focus extra attention on areas that are dry, damaged, or color-treated.

Don’t:

✘ Rinse conditioner out immediately after applying.

✘ Skip conditioner because your hair feels oily.

✘ Detangle aggressively.

✘ Assume all conditioners perform the same.

Pro Tip:

Healthy hair stretches slightly before returning to its original state. Hair that snaps immediately often needs moisture and conditioning support. So, you may want to pair this hair need with a luscious, fatty conditioner that oozes moisture.

Step 3: Moisture – What It Really Means

One of the biggest misconceptions in hair care is confusing oils with moisture.

Water is moisture.

Oils help seal moisture.

Butters help slow moisture loss.

Conditioners help retain moisture.

If water isn’t present somewhere in the process, the hair isn’t truly being moisturized. I can hear you saying….hmmm…good to know!

Do:

✔ Apply styling products to damp or wet hair whenever appropriate.

✔ Use leave-in conditioners to help maintain hydration.

✔ Seal moisture if your hair tends to dry out quickly. A spray bottle (filled with water) is perfect for porous hair that absorbs moisture and dries out quickly! Re-apply water to the desired area and keep going.

✔ Adjust your moisture routine based on climate, lifestyle, and season.

Don’t:

✘ Layer multiple oils onto dry hair expecting hydration.

✘ Use heavy products in abundance simply because someone else had success with them for their hair type. For example: Product usage is a custom process, two people may be able to use the same product but may need different amounts, applied differently based on the fineness or coarseness of each person’s hair.

✘ Ignore how your hair actually responds to products.

Pro Tip:

Moisture and strength must remain balanced. Too much moisture can weaken the hair just as much as too little.

Step 4: Maintenance Between Wash Days

What you do between wash days matters just as much as what happens during them.

Many people have a great Wash Day only to undo their progress throughout the week.

Do:

✔ Sleep with a satin or silk bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase.

✔ Protect your hair from excessive friction.

✔ Refresh only when necessary.

✔ Keep your scalp clean and comfortable.

✔ Moisturize as needed. That varies based on hair type and condition of the strands and or scalp.

Don’t:

✘ Constantly manipulate your hair.

✘ Overuse heat.

✘ Ignore signs of breakage or excessive shedding.

✘ Chase every trending product you see online.

Consistency will outperform product-hopping every time!!

The Bottom Line

Healthy hair isn’t built in one Wash Day .

It’s built through repeated habits that support your hair and scalp over time.

No matter your texture, curl pattern, density, or length goals, the principles remain the same:

• Cleanse properly.
• Condition thoroughly.
• Moisturize intentionally.
• Maintain consistently.

Master these four fundamentals, and you’ll create the perfect foundation for healthier, stronger, more beautiful hair!
