The Wash Day Series: Part 7 ~ Healthy Hair & Heat: Finding the Right Balance

Apryl Weech Lifestyle • July 28, 2026

If there is one topic that creates confusion in the hair world, it’s heat. Some people believe all heat is damaging and should be avoided completely. Others reach for a flat iron or curling iron every day without giving it a second thought. Whew chile!

The truth lies somewhere in the middle. Heat isn’t the enemy. Improper use of heat is.

When used correctly, heat can actually improve manageability, enhance styling, help products perform better, and create beautiful, long-lasting results. The key is understanding when to use it, how to use it, and when your hair needs a break.

Let’s talk about finding the right balance!

Heat Doesn’t Damage Hair Overnight

Hair damage is rarely caused by one blow dry or one silk press. Instead, heat damage usually happens because of repeated exposure to excessive temperatures without proper protection or healthy hair practices.

Over time, too much heat can:

  • Dry out the hair

  • Weaken the protein structure

  • Cause split ends

  • Reduce elasticity

  • Increase breakage

  • Leave hair looking dull instead of shiny

Healthy hair isn’t about avoiding heat forever—it’s about minimizing unnecessary stress on the hair over time. Different styling tools expose the hair to different types and amounts of heat.

Blow Dryers

A quality or professional blow dryer with adjustable heat settings is generally one of the safest heat tools because the heat is constantly moving rather than sitting in one place. What this actually means is that the moving airflow allows moisture to evaporate gradually instead of exposing one section of hair to prolonged, concentrated heat. When used correctly —keeping the dryer several inches away from the hair and continuously moving it rather than holding it in one spot—it significantly reduces the risk of overheating and creating "hot spots" that can damage the hair shaft.

Hooded Dryers

Perfect for roller sets, wraps, deep conditioning treatments, and setting styles with gentle, consistent heat. It is an “ oldie but goodie” method of drying the hair. A trusted way to keep the integrity of the hair, especially if there may be some damage or in need of a little tlc. In my salon, I like to add a roller set in the rotation for certain clients to create a little balance in their routine.

Diffusers

Excellent for curly and hair because they dry the hair more gently while helping preserve natural curl patterns. Alot of people swear by their diffusers, and also depending on the season, they may use them to dry their hair in cold weather; but, they are not my personal preference. Because I like to go through the different days of my “wash and go” (day 2 and 3 being my fav), I prefer to let my hair air dry. If needed, I will flip my head over and air my roots out a bit, but I like my products to dry naturally. More on this in another tutorial….

Flat Irons

Flat irons can create beautifully smooth hair, but they also reach some of the highest temperatures. Multiple passes over the same section increase the risk of damage significantly. If a flat iron is a major part of your styling routine, it is important to invest in a professional grade iron, that is hot enough but protects your hair at the same time, so you only have to make one really good pass per section for the hair to lay the way it needs to. My favorite for a while and only choice in salon is EAP Heat’s 1” Ceramic Flat Iron. Lissssssen to meeeeeeee! Loove Looove Looove!

Curling Irons & Wands

These should be used sparingly and always on completely dry hair prepped with a heat protectant. If you secure your curls at night, they will fall better the next day and decreases the chances of having to re-use the curling iron or wand daily. Verrry important!

Why Heat Can Actually Be Beneficial

When used correctly, heat has several benefits.

It can:

  • Smooth the cuticle for increased shine

  • Reduce frizz

  • Improve manageability

  • Help styles last longer

  • Assist deep conditioners by allowing ingredients to penetrate more effectively (using gentle heat)

  • Make styling easier for certain hair types

Heat is simply a tool. Like every tool, the results depend on the person using it.

Never Skip Heat Protectant

If you only remember one thing from this article, let it be this: Heat protectant is not optional! A heat protectant creates a lightweight barrier between your hair and the styling tool, helping to reduce moisture loss and minimize direct heat exposure. It won’t make your hair invincible. But it gives your hair a much better chance of staying healthy.

Look for products that provide:

  • Heat protection up to the temperature you plan to use

  • Lightweight moisture

  • Frizz control

  • Humidity protection

  • Shine without heaviness

I love Kerastase as a Brand, and the Elixir Ultime really is a three in one product, a Leave-In Conditioner/Detangler, a Heat Protectant before Blowing Out and before Styling, as well as a lovely Maintenance Serum.

BioSilk Silk Therapy is also one of my favorite products. This, much in the same way as Kerastase Elixer Ultime, it acts as a Leave-In Conditioner/Detangler, a Heat Protectant before Blowing out and before Styling, as well as a lovely Maintenance Serum. It has a less expensive price point than the Kerastase Brand but is extremely effective. I love it!

I absolutely loooove this line, and Dominican products period! But…..this Silicon Mix Bambu Sleek Look Spray is eveeeerything!! It is such an effective Leave In Conditioner/Detangler. It provides such a smoooooooth Blow Out Result….OMGGG! (More on this in a Blow Out Tutorial to come.) The smoothness and softness that this product provides gets me excited everyyyytime. It is also the most affordable of the three products listed.

Apply any of these products evenly from mid-length to ends, making sure every section receives adequate saturation before heat styling. Not too much, just enough in each section.

The Biggest Heat Mistakes

Even expensive tools can’t protect hair from poor habits. Some of the most common mistakes include:

  • Using the highest heat setting automatically

  • Flat ironing hair that isn’t completely dry

  • Skipping heat protectant

  • Going over the same section repeatedly

  • Using old tools with damaged plates

  • Heat styling every single day - please don’t!!! Protect your style at night and you have a much higher chance of not needing heat the next morning.

  • Ignoring signs of dryness and breakage

Choosing the Right Temperature

Higher temperatures don’t always mean better styling. Fine, fragile, color-treated, or chemically processed hair usually requires lower heat. Medium-textured hair generally responds well to moderate temperatures. Very coarse or resistant hair may require higher temperatures—but only when the hair is healthy and properly protected. Gray hair also requires a lower setting, so as not singe the hair and cause a yellow-ish hue to be left behind. Soooo tragic! The goal isn’t to use the highest setting. The goal is to use the lowest effective temperature that achieves the desired result.

One Pass Is Better Than Five

One slow, controlled pass with the correct temperature is almost always healthier than making multiple passes with an inferior iron on the wrong setting. Proper sectioning also makes all the difference. Smaller, cleaner sections allow the heat to work more efficiently, reducing the temptation to keep going over the same piece of hair.

Give Your Hair Recovery Days

Just like your skin benefits from rest between treatments, your hair benefits from breaks between heat styling sessions.

On non-heat days, consider:

  • Air drying when possible

  • Roller sets

  • Flexi rods

  • Braids

  • Buns

  • Protective styles

  • Wash-and-go styles (where appropriate)

The less frequently you expose your hair to high temperatures, the easier it becomes to maintain long-term health.

Final Thoughts

Heat isn’t something to fear, and it isn’t something to abuse. Like shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, or styling products, it’s simply another tool in your healthy hair routine. Learn when your hair needs heat, when it needs rest, and how to use the right techniques to protect it along the way.

Because the healthiest hair isn’t achieved by avoiding every styling tool—it’s achieved by making informed decisions every step of the process. Healthy hair and beautiful styling can absolutely coexist when balance becomes part of your routine!
