The Wash Day Series Part 4: Conditioning ~ The Most Overlooked Step in Hair Care

Apryl Weech Lifestyle • July 1, 2026

When people think about healthy hair, they often focus on shampoo, styling products, oils, and growth serums.

Rarely do they think about conditioner.

Yet conditioning is one of the most important steps in any healthy hair routine, and truly one of my favorites!

In fact, if I could improve just one thing in most people’s wash day routine, it would be how they approach conditioning.

What Does Conditioner Actually Do?

Think of shampoo and conditioner as a team.

Shampoo cleanses the hair and scalp by removing dirt, oil, and product buildup.

Conditioner helps replenish moisture, improve manageability, reduce friction, and support the overall health of the hair strand.

Without conditioning, hair can become rough, tangled, dry, and more prone to breakage.

Why Your Hair Needs Conditioner

Every time your hair is exposed to cleansing, environmental stressors, heat, friction, or styling, it experiences some degree of wear and tear.

Conditioner helps:

  • Improve softness

  • Increase manageability

  • Reduce tangles

  • Improve elasticity

  • Minimize breakage ~ this is sooooooooo important!

  • Enhance shine

  • Support moisture retention

Healthy hair isn’t simply about growing hair longer.

It’s about keeping the hair you already have healthy enough to retain length. Unfortunately, most people completely miss a major contributing factor to the demise of their hair quality. It is like the real killer in the background that no one sees; LACK OF MOISTURE, which leads to extreme dryness! This applies to all hair types, especially, natural or relaxed hair. More on this to come….

Conditioner Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

One of the biggest misconceptions in hair care is that everyone needs the same type of conditioner.

Your ideal conditioner depends on several factors:

  • Hair texture

  • Density

  • Porosity

  • Chemical treatments

  • Color services

  • Heat styling habits

  • Environmental exposure

What works beautifully for one person may leave another person’s hair feeling heavy, dry, or coated.

Learning what your hair and or hair type needs at any given moment is often more important than following trends. For example, it is summer, the person who is enjoying frequent boat/beach days or lounging by and in the pool will definitely need a conditioner that did not come to play. But, the person with natural hair and their natural color, the person with relaxed hair and a semi/demi permanent color (for gray coverage), and the person with heavily lightened blonde hair can all be doing the exact same activities—yet their conditioning needs will be vastly different.

Don’t Rush the Conditioning Process

Another common mistake? Applying conditioner and rinsing it out immediately. Conditioners need time to do their job. After applying conditioner, gently distribute it throughout the hair and allow it to sit for several minutes before rinsing. This is an important tip! This gives the ingredients time to interact with the hair strand and provide maximum benefit.

Focus on the Mid-Lengths and Ends

The oldest and most fragile parts of your hair are typically the mid-lengths and ends. These areas have experienced the most exposure to weather, styling, manipulation, and daily wear. When conditioning, give special attention to these sections. They’re often where moisture and protection are needed most. Also, where most of the breakage happens!

Detangling Starts Here

For many hair types—especially curly, coily, and textured hair—conditioning is the ideal time to detangle. The added slip from conditioner helps reduce friction and minimizes unnecessary breakage. I tend to start to entangle gently with my hands at the bowl. I massage the hair apart and clear out with my fingers, then rinse. Work patiently and gently, whilst giving the product the time to penetrate the shaft.

Activee Keratin Treatment is such a good choice for repairing the hair.

Deep Conditioning: Is It Necessary?

Yes, it is!

If your hair feels unusually dry, brittle, difficult to manage, or has been exposed to chemical services, heat styling, or environmental stress, a deep conditioning treatment can provide additional support. But, doesn’t all of this just sound like the happenings of regular life? So, my suggestion is yes, put a deep conditioning treatment in your routine at least every two weeks.

Think of deep conditioning as targeted care when your hair needs extra attention (the way you take your car in to be serviced)—it is maintenance, an important part of your routine, but not necessarily something required every single wash day.

This 2 - 5 min treatment is a game changer, an oldie but goodie!

The Bottom Line

Conditioner isn’t an optional extra. It’s an essential part of maintaining healthy, manageable hair. A good conditioner helps support moisture, improve elasticity, reduce breakage, and create the foundation for successful styling.

If shampoo prepares the canvas, conditioner helps preserve the masterpiece. The healthiest hair routines aren’t built on complicated product collections. They’re built on consistently doing the fundamentals well. Conditioning is one fundamental you don’t want to skip!
